Efficacy of Alexandrite laser in the prevention of recurrences of pilonidal sinus disease

Published:October 18, 2022DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bjps.2022.10.045
Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is an acquired condition related to the entrapment of loose hair in the natal cleft. After a first inflammatory episode of PSD, a wait-and-see approach is recommended. In case of a recurrence or complicated forms, the gold standard of treatment is surgery. Recurrences occur in up to 30% of patients after surgery.

Shaving or laser hair removal (LHR) from the natal cleft are systematically proposed for PSD but, to our knowledge, the ideal time to perform LHR has not been evaluated yet.

In this study, we retrospectively compared two different LHR strategies with long-pulse Alexandrite laser for PSD, as primary prevention after an inflammatory episode, or as an adjunct to surgery.
