Use of dermatome blade in shaping costal cartilage for nasal reconstruction

Published:December 14, 2011DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bjps.2011.11.060
Based on anecdotal use, we have found the dermatome blade to be a useful and reliable tool for slicing and shaping costal cartilage for nasal reconstruction. Using a damp swab to support the base of the costal cartilage, a dermatome blade is used to slice the costal cartilage to an appropriate and uniform thickness and shape (Figure 1). We find this a more stable technique than using a scalpel in achieving the desired contour, in addition to being inexpensive and readily available. This could be applied to preparation of cartilage graft in any setting. A literature search has only revealed a limited number of documented descriptions of similar techniques.
