Although the benefit of adding distraction osteogenesis to a Le Fort III osteotomy is recognized by all craniofacial surgeons, reliable long term results to prove this clinical assumption are largely missing. One of the major reasons is the very low prevalence of particularly Crouzon, Pfeiffer and Apert syndromes. A multicenter study, as presented by these authors is the only solution to gather enough data for outcome reports.
