      Split-thickness skin grafts are frequently meshed in plastic surgery practice because of several well-known advantages.

      The mesh skin graft.
      Whenever the mechanical mesher is not available, the skin graft is usually meshed by hand, by simply cutting it with a kidney or any solid base as a platform. This method is time-consuming and impractical; therefore a number of techniques have been published in an endeavour to discover the best way to mesh a graft without a mechanical device. These methods consist of:
      • 1.
        Placing the graft directly on the Discard-A-Pad and cutting it;
      • 2.
        Cutting the elevated skin of the graft as it is still attached to its donor site;
        • Ellabban M.G.
        An easy technique for manual meshing of split-thickness skin grafts.
      • 3.
        Incising the donor site before harvesting the graft;
        • Staiano J.J.
        • Dhital S.K.
        Meshing a small skin graft.
      • 4.
        Folding the graft over a piece of paper and making alternate cuts;
        • Yanai A.
        • Hiraga Y.
        Method for preparing meshed skin grafts without using skin graft meshers.
      • 5.
        Wrapping the graft around a chest tube and cutting all the layers at one time.

        • Uysal O.A.
        An easy and affective method for preparing meshed skin grafts.
      All the previously described techniques are effective in fenestrating a skin graft.
