Crucial incision method for Stahl's ear reconstruction

Published:April 24, 2007DOI:
Stahl's ear is a rare auricle anomaly characterised by extension of the third crus from the antihelix across the scaphoid fossa. Diverse methods for reconstructing Stahl's ear have been reported. Since 1999, we have reconstructed Stahl's ear using the ‘crucial incision method’ described by Torikai et al.

Figure 1Scheme of the ‘crucial incision method’. The abnormal crus is unfolded by making crucial incisions on the back of the third crus. The incisions are made on the cartilage to the depth of 3/4 of the thickness. Next, a conchal cartilage is harvested and grafted on the incised cartilage to stabilise the released third crus by the splinting effect. The helical rim is reconstructed by folding the perichondrio-cutaneous flap.
