      Summary

The scanning electron microscope has been used to examine dewaxed thick sections of human skin. The features of the epidermis and dermis are described, particular attention being paid to the fibres of the dermis. The advantages and disadvantages of the technique are pointed out and the difficulties of interpretation of the scanning electron micrograph are discussed.
